Belfast – February 2007

Belfast City is a mere 30 minutes flying time from Edinburgh! Add some cheap airfares from EasyJet, and we were on our way to Northern Ireland. A relaxing weekend in the North’s capital city, gave us enough time to take in the sights – just enough for a taster as we will be back here in late March!

Belfast City Hall – Opened in August 1906. The dome rises to a height of 53 meters (173 feet)

The Crumlin Road Court House, Crumlin Road

Murals on Falls Road

Murals on Shankill Road

The Big Fish at Laganside Lookout… quite a catch!

‘Interesting’ mural near St Anne’s Cathedral

Pottinger’s Entry - Pottinger’s short-cut to the Morning Star pub maybe?

St Patrick outside Belfast’s St Patrick’s Church.

The imposing Celtic cross at the North Transept of the St Anne’s Cathedral, completed in 1981.

Art near Queen’s Bridge, known as ‘The Thing With The Ring’… (no kidding!)

The (slightly) leaning Albert Memorial Clock Tower in Queen’s Square. Build (straight) in 1867 by WJ Barre (so we are told).

Belfast Castle on the slopes of Cave Hill.

The castle was only built, in the then-fashionable Scottish Baronial style, in 1870. It was presented to the City of Belfast in 1934. Very nice gardens and artwork for cat lovers!

Night view of 'The Thing With The Ring' from the Weir

The Grand Opera House – across the road from the famous Crown Liquor Saloon

The Crown Liquor Saloon on the Golden Mile – built by Patrick Flanagan in 1885… and still serving a great pint of Guinness… well, that is when the place is open… It was closed for some minor repairs – I suppose after 122 years that would be ok. They probably installed the latest web cam! Check it out!

The famous crown mosaic at the front door – nationalist visitors would walk over, unionist patrons around.

As the Crown Bar was closed, we dropped into Robinson’s Pub next door for a hard-earned pint!

Since we will be back in Belfast in late March, we shall give the Crown Liquor Saloon another go. Also, a climb to the top of Cave Hill and a visit to Stormont Castle might be appropriate! Already looking forward to that!
