Rome - May 2006

Back from Japan, we had hardly any time left settling back into our jobs before we were off again – this time to Rome! For those of you in the know, my dad used to be a Swiss Guard in Rome. This year, the Swiss Guards celebrated their 500 Year Anniversary and to commemorate, Ex Guards followed their predecessors’ steps by walking the 720km from Switzerland to Rome…

The least we could do was to be there when dad and the hikers arrived! The festivities around this event, along with the mandatory sightseeing, pizza eating and gelati sampling, made this an unforgettable weekend trip! Whilst enjoying perfect spring weather, we check out Trevi Fountain, St Peter’s Basilica and Square, The Roman Forum and the Coliseum and the many Piazzas. We were lucky enough to get a private tour of the Sistine Chapel (sure beats waiting in a 1km long queue – and I am not kidding!!!) and enjoyed a celebration party at the Castel Sant’Angelo.

And… just in case anyone wondered… yes, the Pope came out to say hi too!
