Tanzania – January 2007

I have always liked volcanoes, big volcanoes! Cone-shaped and snow-capped they rise above the land. If you have seen Mt Fuji (Japan), Mt Taranaki (New Zealand), Popocatepetl (Mexico) you know what I am talking about! Not the prettiest of the lot, but Mt Kilimanjaro (Africa’s highest peak - 5895m a.s.l.) in Tanzania has always been on my ‘must-see’ list… but climbing it? Well, climbing Mt Kilimanjaro was the reason that I headed – on short notice – to Tanzania! And since one can’t go to Africa without the obligatory safari, a day trip to the Arusha National Park was on the list too…

Here are a few impressions from Tanzania… If you are keen to learn more about the climb of Kilimanjaro, check out the detailed, day-by-day trip notes of the climb (but don’t blame me if you want to climb it afterwards!). Alternatively, you can check out all my Tanzania holiday pics on .

The small (137 sq km) Arusha National Park is close to Arusha town, ideal for a day trip.

Ngurdoto Crater whose steep, rocky cliffs enclose a wide marshy floor dotted with herds of buffalo and warthog.

A warthog on the run…

A baboon by the road side… waiting for a ride?

Mount Meru - the fifth highest mountain in Africa at 4,566 metres (14,990 feet) – after a thunderstorm.

Yep… still NO idea what to expect…

Acrobatic black-and-white colobus monkeys at Mandara Hut

Arriving at Horombo Hut at 3720m… still another 2200m to go…

The sun’s setting at Horombo Hut

The crazed people and their guides: Felix, Jimmy, Emmanuel, Justo and Chris!

Mt Kilimanjaro and a giant grevilleas

Crossing alpine desert and heading towards Kibo Hut at 4750m a.s.l.

At Kibo Hut – the end is near!...

African sunrise – seen from Gilman’s Point at 6:32AM… I hardly remember taking any photos…

Chris, Jimmy and Felix at Uhuru Peak (5,895m or 19,340 ft). – on top the world (well, in Africa anyway…)

Mount Meru, seen from Kilimanjaro

Panoramic view towards the west (glacier view) from Uhuru Peak

It doesn’t seem as big AFTER you’ve climbed… seen from outside the Keys Hotel in Moshi

Last view of Mt Kilimanjaro as I am heading north to Nairobi (Kenya)
