York – February 2007

York, with its well preserved city walls, Britain’s largest Gothic Cathedral – the York Minster, Clifford’s Tower, Merchant Adventurer’s Hall, the York Brewery (home of the Yorkshire Terrier) and countless pubs, offers plenty for a weekend getaway! If you are prepared to walk your feet off, head to York – otherwise, check out the pictures, links and commentary below!

Micklegate Bar – 800 years old and the main entrance to the city from the south.

Swinegate

St Mary’s Abbey – or what’s left of it! Founded in 1080 by Benedictine monks, dissolved on the orders of Henry VIII in 1539, and it was all downhill from there…

Merchant Adventurer’s Hall – one of the best preserved medieval guildhalls in Europe, dating back to the 14th century!

The Undercroft used to serve as a charity hospital.

Clifford’s Tower – one of the few remaining parts of York Castle. This stone keep was built between 1245 and 1262, a couple of centuries after William the Conqueror built the first castle in York.

York Minster – the largest medieval cathedral in England. It’s massive!

Walmgate Bar – our favorite gate!

Walking the City Wall – or are we on the way to the pub?
